What training is available to my workforce?
To help Careers Progression and Development (CPD) there are multiple options available:
Off-the-job training can involve working towards a formal certification such as the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) or even a Chartership of a certain skill or job area. This can lead to advancing career prospects whilst supporting the company and local industry.
On-the-job training comprises of shadowing, apprenticeships and work experience. The training may not transfer into to a qualification or certification, but will add to the expertise and experience of an individual.
Yes. The CITB Grants Scheme provides grants for employers in the construction industry to train their workers.
The scheme helps to maintain health and safety standards on construction sites and to ensure the right skills are available for the industry to grow.
The Cornwall Construction Training Group is a great first point of call for all things training related.
Cornwall Construction Training Group (CCTG) is funded by CITB to ensure robust and vitally important training is undertaken throughout the county, locally CCTG are managed by a non-paid committee made up of five local professionals who work within the industry.
CCTG have 25-member companies ranging from Micro businesses to large household names and covering the breadth of the industry such as Scaffolding, Roofing, Maintenance and general building firms, our members currently pay £100 plus vat a year for this service, last year we arranged over 400 training days.
Each group has a Group Training Officer on a part time basis, who is there to support members with the coordination of training and will represent the group at other networks to add value to the members i.e. Cornwall LEP, CITB events, CIOB events, careers events etc.
CCTG negotiate with local training providers a preferential training group rate as we purchase a lot of training – this is passed directly onto the member, whether this be SMSTS, SSSTS, H&S Awareness, First Aid and more.
In most circumstances CCTG can draw down further funding from CITB to support your training and you can still claim your short duration grant.
CCTG can work with you to identify training you may require and support with training that needs to be renewed.
CCTG can also offer support with funding bids to the CITB:
CITB has pots of money group members can bid for to support training – CCTG can guide and advise on these pots of money
Skills and training funding- provide an extra incentive to small employers to deliver construction training which align with CITB. This funding also supports training interventions in management & leadership. Up to 10k size of company dependent.
Flexible funding– for training and upskilling workforce, innovation, commissioned and enhanced incentives 0-18-month timescale up to £500k bids
Structured funding– for large ongoing project 18months to 5 years such as infrastructure support up to £3m bids
